Even Jesus

   Must have been

     frightened

   as he reached

   into darkness

    wrenched

    the spirit

     from sleep

     and forced it

          back

          into

     his friend’s

          body.

Even He

   Must have been

     amazed

     as Lazarus rose

     from his stinking tomb

and nature roared in protest.

Even He

   Must have trembled        

     shocked by his own

         arrogance.

Lazarus -

bewildered,

weeping, 
stumbled and collapsed

into Jesus' arms.

Then

and only

then

and never

again

world

without

end.
